About the Job
Full-Time
Mid-Level
Based on Experience
Chicago, IL
Hybrid
This is a full-time position for an architectural professional who is comfortable working across multiple project types and phases. Because GRDS is a small, collaborative practice, this role offers broad exposure and requires someone who can take ownership of assignments while shifting between design, documentation, coordination, fieldwork, and project-management responsibilities.
The ideal candidate is adaptable, organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working on multiple projects simultaneously. Specific project-type experience is less important than the ability to understand project needs, learn quickly, and move work forward with general supervision.
Immediate projects are anticipated to include multifamily housing, mixed-use developments, commercial tenant build-outs, adaptive reuse, and community-focused projects.
Typical responsibilities may include:
- Preparing and coordinating architectural drawings and construction documents using Revit
- Developing projects from design through construction-document phases
- Performing building-code and zoning research and analysis
- Coordinating architectural work with structural, MEP, civil, and other consultants
- Performing existing-conditions surveys and field verification
- Assisting with 3D laser scanning and reality-capture workflows
- Preparing and maintaining project schedules and deliverables
- Assisting with building-permit applications and agency submissions
- Participating in client, consultant, and project-team meetings
- Supporting Construction Administration, including submittal and RFI review, field observations, and documentation
- Preparing, editing, and coordinating project specifications
- Researching building materials, products, systems, and manufacturers
- Communicating with product representatives and coordinating technical meetings
- Assisting with project proposals, presentations, and other business-development materials
- Supporting overall project coordination and documentation
- Using AI-assisted tools to support research, correspondence, scheduling, documentation, coordination, and other project tasks
- Assisting with office and practice-management activities as needed
Applicant Requirements
Candidates should have:
- A professional degree in architecture from a NAAB-accredited program (B.Arch or M.Arch)
- Approximately 3–6 years of professional experience in an architectural office
- Demonstrated experience preparing architectural construction documents
- Professional experience using Revit to prepare construction documents in an architectural office setting
- The ability to effectively develop and coordinate construction documents with general supervision
- Experience coordinating projects, consultants, schedules, and project deliverables
- A strong understanding of building construction and architectural detailing
- A working understanding of architectural/enclosure, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and civil building systems
- Experience performing building-code research and applying code requirements to architectural projects
- Strong design and problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong organizational and time-management skills
- The ability to exercise sound professional judgment, prioritize assignments, and move work forward with general supervision
- The ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously
- The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a project team
- A strong work ethic and attention to detail
- An entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to take ownership of responsibilities
- Experience performing material and product research, existing-conditions verification, consultant coordination, and communication with manufacturers and product representatives
- The ability to prepare presentations and clearly communicate design intent
- AutoCAD
- Affinity Photo, Publisher, and Designer or comparable Adobe Creative Suite applications
- Twinmotion
- Rhino
- QGIS
- 3D laser scanning and reality-capture technologies
