Job Description The City of Naperville seeks a highly motivated, energetic Planner who thrives in fast-paced work environments to join our Planning Services Team.  The Community Planner II is responsible for a wide range of duties which include coordination of development applications and site plan reviews, assistance with special and long-range planning projects, preparation of text amendments to existing Zoning Regulations, and the provision of superior-quality customer service.  The Community Planner II is a senior-level position within the Planning Services Team, undertaking more complex development cases and special studies assigned to the team, as well as serving as the backup to the Zoning Administrator, as needed.  The Community Planner II has potential for supervisory responsibilities. Duties   The Planner II reviews complex development projects for compliance with all City codes, as well as land use design best practices.   The Planner II will regularly coordinate with the City’s Development Review Team and the City’s Legal Team to prepare staff reports and ordinances for review, approval, and presentation to the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.   The Planner II will also participate in a variety of projects generated by and presented to the Human Rights and Fair Housing Commission, Downtown Advisory Committee, and Historic Preservation Commission.   Additional responsibilities include representing the division at meetings with developers and other City employees (wherein you will contribute technical planning and zoning comments on development proposals); responding to inquiries from developers, realtors, and other organizations; and leading special studies on topics such as land use compatibility, population trends, neighborhood planning & development, and transportation issues.   Additional Information   The City of Naperville, Illinois is a dynamic community of 148,000 residents, conveniently located 28 miles west of Chicago.  Various publications have named Naperville as one of the best cities in the United States in which to live.  The City has gained national recognition for our family-friendly environment, excellent schools and library system, low crime rate, and vibrant downtown area.  It’s also a great place to work!  Our municipal government employs over 900 dedicated individuals in a wide range of job categories and provides a collaborative working environment, a forward-looking leadership team, and a competitive benefits package.   Applications should be completed thoroughly, and resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an application but should be attached to the application.  Include all requested education, experience, attachments, and other information when applying. Applicant Requirements

Qualifications   Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, or a closely related field
  • Five years of municipal or closely related planning experience
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Valid IL Driver’s License
Preferred:
  • Master’s degree in Planning, or related field
  • Previous experience with significant development projects
