Tour of the Academy for Global Citizenship, the Midwest’s First K-12 PHIUS Certified and LBC Designed School

Summary

Built on the former site of the Chicago Housing Authority’s LeClaire Homes, the Academy for Global Citizenship (AGC), a pre-K to 8 charter school, anchors Cultivate Collective’s 6-acre campus. This innovative facility includes a Head Start center, outpatient health center, three-acre urban farm, on-site market, community hall, and teaching kitchens for nutrition education. The 71,000sf learning laboratory pioneers as the Midwest’s inaugural Living Building Challenge design and PHIUS certified school, promoting net-positive energy use and sustainability.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify requirements and key attributes of the AGC building that meet the full petal certification for the Living Building Challenge and the PHIUS Zero 2021 Design Certification.
  2. Discover unique programmatic elements of the interior and exterior designed influenced by Living Building Challenge imperatives.
  3. Learn about innovative sustainable design features incorporated into the design in order to meet net-positive energy and water. Review advanced MEP systems, super-insulated envelope consideration, and an on-site stormwater management system.
  4. Explore how AGC’s engagement with the community shaped AGC’s vision and program for the campus by incorporating health care services, an urban farm, a community market, and learning kitchens which all further supports the educational vision and mission for the school and the community.
