Join AIA Chicago’s Custom Residential Architects Network (CRAN) Knowledge Community for a rare opportunity to tour a contemporary residential masterpiece designed by Dirk Denison Architects.

This exclusive tour includes both the home’s interior and exterior, led by the architect and builder themselves. They’ll discuss the challenges of the site, the unique materials chosen, the inspiration behind the striking design, and how they translated the homeowner’s vision into a remarkable piece of architecture.

The exact location of the home and parking location will be provided 24 hours prior to the event start time.
This tour has a capacity of 30 people.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the difficulties presented by the unique site located on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and how the programmatic requirements of the client were solved in such a challenging environment.
  2. Understand how and why the Architect chose and incorporated the simple building materials (terrazzo, steel, glass, stone and metal panels and green roof) used throughout the home and what the design and construction implications were for these choices.
  3. Understand the unique structural system and techniques employed to create the curved cantilevered structures that hover over the lake bluff and create such open spans of glass to take advantage of the views.
  4. Understand the unique viewpoints of both the architect and the builder as to the challenges and solutions they both encountered on designing and building on such a difficult site and with such unique design.
