Architects in Schools Training Session and Sign-Up

Summary

Become a mentor in the AIA Chicago Foundation’s Architects in Schools (AIS) middle school program. Erin Sanchez and David Sikorkis, co-chairs of the Community Engagement Committee will provide a curriculum overview, mentor roles, and teaching tips. This is mandatory for first-time participants.

AIS is an initiative that brings architecture professionals into Chicago Public School classrooms to introduce middle school students to the field of architecture and to discuss the broader theme of architecture as a change-maker. It is an 8-week long program, with 4-6 practicing architect volunteers visiting a single classroom once a week for the duration of one class period (1.5-2 hours depending on school). The curriculum consists of an introduction to architecture and design, design exercises, field trips, and a final group project.

The program begins the week of March 6. We will be teaching in the schools listed below.

  • Chavez Multicultural Academic Center, upper class building, 4831 S. Hermitage Ave. (Back of the Yards)
  • Pullman Elementary School, 11311 S. Forrestville Ave. (Pullman)
