Monday, January 30, 2023, CHICAGO – AIA Chicago, the second largest chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the collective voice of over 4,000 licensed architects, emerging professionals, architecture students, and allied professionals, has sent a letter to the nine Chicago mayoral candidates on behalf of the Chicago Built Environment Coalition.
This coalition is comprised of organizations focused on design and equity in Chicago: AIA Chicago; AIA Illinois; American Society of Landscape Architects, Illinois chapter; Arquitectos Chicago; Chicago Architecture Center; Chicago Metro Section of the Illinois Chapter of the American Planning Association; Chicago Women in Architecture; Illinois Green Alliance; Landmarks Illinois; Metropolitan Planning Council; and the National Organization of Minority Architects, Illinois chapter.
Each organization includes the education of its members, as well as the public, on how design is a key aspect of addressing a wide range of issues in our city. Questions range from zoning and planning changes, We Will Chicago implementation, the 2022 Chicago Climate Action Plan, and how they plan on correcting racial inequities in the built environment.
Candidates have until Monday, February 6, 2023, to submit a response. Responses, or lack-thereof, will be distributed to members and followers of each organization, as well as the local media. The Coalition will not endorse any specific individual or group of candidates.
